For those of you who love taking walks down characteristic paths and trails, here are some tips for when you visit Tuscany that will allow you to admire all the beauty of this land. One of the most famous itineraries centers on the local quarries, representing a vital element of Tuscan history. Every part of the region has benefited from the marble extraction industry: Versilia, Florence, Carrara… The journey to discover the road of marble starts off in Carrara and continues all the way to Colonnata, a town famous also for its prized lard. From here, our journey continues towards the old marble railway that runs alongside the quarries, some of which are also open to tourists. And while you’re here, the Museo Delle Cave in the town of Fantiscritti is also definitely worth a visit. One can’t help but to mention Via Francigena, one of the most ancient and renowned trails in Italian history. The part of the trail that runs through Tuscany touches 38 municipalities and involves about a thousand accommodation facilities and restaurants. The most evocative routes are via dei Monasteri (which from Florence will take you to Santuario de La Verna and Eremo di Camaldoli), Vetta le Croci, Madonna del Sasso, Santa Brigida, Rufina, Pratovecchio, and Poppi. Via di San Jacopo (which crosses through Pistoia, the city that treasures the saint’s relic) and Cammino di San Francesco, which from Santuario de La Verna leads to Assisi, connecting to the Umbrian portion of Via Francigena, are also noteworthy. Another very ancient and special trail, via dei Remi, connects the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The trail starts off in the town of Barga in the province of Lucca, and unfolds between the Apuan Alps and Valle del Serchio. Tuscany is also famous for its precious wines and as a matter of fact, there are several trails that will take you on a discovery of the local vineyards. These include the famous 'Strade del vino' or 'Wine roads', such as Strada del Chianti on the Colli Fiorentini, Strada del vino of the Colline Lucchesi a Montecarlo, Strada del Vino Nobile of Montepulciano in the Siena hinterland, Strada del Vino Costa degli Etruschi, which runs along the coast and even the Island of Elba, and Strada medicea dei vini di Carmignano in the area around Prato. Another ancient and evocative pathway is Via del Sale, which from Volterra ventures into the Tuscan hinterland and which used to be traveled by merchants carrying the salt to the local marketplace. This ingredient, which is widely used to store foods, was once extracted from the salt lakes around Volterra, from whence it was then exported throughout the region. These itineraries and plenty more make Tuscany a special region to be enjoyed every step of the way.
